Sun Screen – Which One Do I Buy?

Posted by drmichaelhynes. 1 Comment

This time of year we are inundated with the need for wearing Sun Screen — the TV, Radio, and Print materials tell us the dangers of not protecting our skin from the sun.  We know that repeated and ongoing exposure to the UV radiation from the sun and indoor tanning beds causes our skin to age earlier with wrinkles and to develop brown spots and discolorations from the sun.  In extreme instances, repeated sun exposure can cause skin cancers and the deadliest form, Melanoma.  Many of us grew up thinking the more sun tan we had, the more attractive we were.  Unbelievably there are still a few people who hold onto this thought!

Every year there are more and more sun screen choices to buy and it gets pretty confusing.  Who has the time to read all the labels to make the best choice?

We carry 4 sun screens by SKINCEUTICALS and we think they are great.  There are 2 we especially like and our patients have found to be very effective.  One is the

SPORT 45 which has an SPF of 45 but also it does not wash off with sweat and perspiration and it lasts for several hours.  This is especially perfect for those of you who enjoy outdoor sports in the summer (golf, tennis, baseball, etc.) — either as a participant or an observer.  This is also great for those of you who spend time at a lake or enjoy water sports as SPORT 45 lasts longer than most other sun screens.  You don’t have to keep re-applying it every couple of hours.

Our second favorite sun screen is the SPF 50, SHEER PHYSICAL UV DEFENSE.

This sunscreen is very sheer and it is chemical free.  Because it is translucent in color, it is a great choice to put under makeup at the beginning of the day.   It is also great to share with that special man in your life who objects to wearing sun screen because he doesn’t like the feel of “creamy stuff” on his face.  This is also effective for the entire body.

We are offering a special price on our sunscreen: 15% OFF! And if you don’t have time to come into the office to purchase one or more of these sun screens; we will mail the sunscreen to you and we will pay for the shipping. This offer is good through Labor Day, September 6, 2010.

ENJOY THE REMAINDER OF THE SUMMER!!

Dr. Hynes Asks: “Is Your Body Ready for Summer?”

Posted by drmichaelhynes. No Comments

Hynes Plastic Surgery Center offers a new alternative to traditional liposuction for a tighter, slimmer body.  Laser Liposuction, using the Sciton Laser, is a procedure for melting and removing unwanted fat without the risk, or extended downtime following traditional liposuction. The Sciton Laser uses the most advanced technology for optimal body sculpting results.  Only one treatment is required and results are immediate!

Laser Liposuction is done entirely in the office with a local anesthetic.  One of the greatest benefits of this new procedure is that a general anesthetic, where the patient is placed in a deep sleep, is not required.   It allows Dr. Hynes to perform the Laser Liposuctionin in his Laser Suite which is part of his comfortable office.  It is also more cost effective as outpatient hospital and anesthesia costs are not needed.

Laser Liposuction is ideal for eliminating fat from specific regions of the body, especially those “smaller areas” that just won’t go away with diet and exercising.  Popular areas are the chin, upper arms, tummy, flanks, love handles, buttocks, and upper thighs.  All of these are perfect areas to have some attention given as we head into the summer season.  Both Men and Women have been enjoying the results of Laser Liposuction.

Laser energy is directed to specific areas of body fat, liquefying the fat cells while contouring the body.  The targeted body fat is removed and the result is a firm, more attractive body contour.  The incision Dr. Hynes uses is so small, only 1 or2 stitches are needed for closure at the end of the procedure.  Recovery is faster with significantly shorter down time.  In fact, patients typically return to work and normal activities within 1 or 2 days and can resume exercising in 2 weeks.

Please telephone our office and schedule a complimentary consultation where Dr. Hynes will meet with you personally and discuss your options for Laser Liposuction.

Watch more about Laser-Liposuction (Pro-Lipo Plus) and see what patients say.

What are our patients saying?

“I had Laser Liposuction a few months ago for the loose skin under my arms.  I am extremely happy with the results and would recommend Laser Liposuction to anyone.  There were no problems, and I was able to return to work the next day. I would be comfortable doing any cosmetic procedure with Dr. Hynes.  Dr. Hynes makes you feel completely safe, he is honest, and confidante of his excellent results.

“I had Laser Liposuction for my Tummy and Love Handles about 5 months ago in Dr. Hynes’ Laser Suite in his office.  I had no pain or discomfort during recovery; although I did have a slight ‘pinching sensation’ during the procedure.  I am so happy with the results; I am able to tighten my belt around my waist 4 holes down from where it was before the procedure.  My belly is almost flat, which after having one baby a long time ago, is great!  I love the way everything looks.  I would definitely recommend doing the procedure…. And I would even do it again!”

Silicone vs. Saline – Which One is For You?

Posted by drmichaelhynes. 1 Comment

You would never go into any surgery without researching all the different options, and breast augmentation surgery is no different. One of the main issues you should discuss with your plastic surgeon when considering breast surgery is what kind of implants you want, namely, silicone implants or saline implants.

What’s the Difference?
Both silicone and saline implants work in essentially the same way. A silicone sack is filled with either silicone gel or saline liquid (salt water), sealed, and then implanted into the breast. However, they differ in several ways.  Saline implants cost a little less than the Silicone gel implants, but don’t let price be your main consideration.  There is more to learn about the different implants

Saline implants are an older style of implant, and generally have more side effects than silicone implants. Saline implants are associated with post-operative pain and loss of sensation in the breasts and nipples, often requiring additional surgery to fix, which is hard on the body and the wallet. The main issue with saline implants is their tendency to break and leak into the surrounding tissue, which becomes increasingly likely to happen the longer the implant is in the body, and is virtually guaranteed to happen at some point during the implant’s lifespan. When a saline implant breaks it noticeably deflates as it leaks saline solution into the breast, and requires reconstructive surgery to remove the ruptured implant and replace it with a new implant. One study showed that over 20 percent of women with saline implants required additional surgery within three years of their augmentation, and 70 percent experienced at least one serious side effect.

Silicone implants, on the other hand, are the newer form of breast implants, and are usually more durable, with fewer instances of side effects. Most women and plastic surgeons consider them to be more natural feeling, as the silicone gel more accurately mimics breast tissue. The side effects of silicone implants are nominally similar to those of saline implants, namely, post-operative pain and scarring, though these effects occur far less with silicone implants than with saline implants. As far as leakage goes, newer silicone implants are filled with a cohesive gel that will not disperse into the surrounding tissue, making leakage virtually impossible.

So Which One is Better?

When it comes down to it, silicone’s more natural feel and proven safety track record makes it a much better candidate for most augmentation patients, and consequently, most women are choosing to go with silicone implants rather than saline. Aside from the facts that they are less likely to require repeat surgeries, and the instances of harmful side effects are far fewer, the innovations in silicone implants preventing ruptures and leakage make them the superior choice.

Decisions like this need to be made with your doctor’s advice during a detailed pre-operative consultation, such as that offered by Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Michael Hynes at the Hynes Plastic Surgery Center in Kansas City. With over twenty-five years experience in doing breast augmentations, and including the latest in silicone memory gel implants from Mentor Corporation., Dr. Hynes certainly is well-qualified to tell you which one is right for your augmentation surgery, and he is more than happy to discuss the pros and cons of silicone gel and saline implant options, along with any other plastic surgery concerns you might have.  Dr Hynes’ patients have been extremely satisfied with the Silicone Gel implants and several have volunteered to speak to perspective patients if they wish to discuss their experience with the surgery and the silicone implants.

Plastic Surgery Costs Less in the Midwest

Posted by drmichaelhynes. No Comments

Kansas City: Unexpected Plastic Surgery Mecca

Plastic surgery used to be the fountain of youth for celebrities and the uber-rich, but now procedures like tummy tucks, breast augmentations and mommy makeovers are common and popular even for the most average of people. Unfortunately, many people make the mistake of not shopping around when it comes to plastic surgery and end up paying thousands of dollars more than they need. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has found that statistically, the Midwest is by far the cheapest region for high quality plastic surgery, so cheap, in fact, that it even offsets the price of the plane ticket to get there.

Cost of Common Procedure by Region

According to the ASAPS, the most commonly sought plastic surgery procedures are the most expensive on the coasts, and get cheaper as you go in towards the Midwest. For instance, a tummy tuck will cost you anywhere from $6000 to $15,000 in Los Angeles or San Diego, and the same procedure in New York usually costs upwards of $9,000. However, in the Midwest, particularly Kansas, Nebraska, and Minnesota, the same procedure runs about $3,500. Likewise, a breast augmentation that averages a cost of $8,000 on the West Coast and at least that much in New York, costs about $4,000 in the Midwest. The same applies for the increasingly popular mommy makeovers. While the cost of a mommy makeover varies depending on the number of procedures you have done, the average mommy makeover (that is, a tummy tuck combined with a breast augmentation) on the coasts costs a minimum of $14,000, but only $10,000 in the Midwest.

There is clearly a dramatic cost difference, but why? Like anything else, plastic surgery costs respond to the market demands. Since the coasts are known as popular plastic surgery hot spots, venues there can charge more because people, daunted by the thought of flight fares and hotel fees, are willing to pay more for the convenience of recovering in their own home. However, is convenience worth four, five, or even ten thousand dollars?

The Extras: Flight Costs, Hotel Fees, and Car Rental

The fact is, that due to the huge pricing gap, it is still cheaper to fly to the Midwest, stay in a hotel for a week, and rent a car to get to the clinic and back than it is to get plastic surgery on the coast, and is certainly cheaper than actually traveling to the coast for a procedure. While flight prices change every day, a round trip flight from the big coastal cities like New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Orlando to Kansas City costs less than two hundred dollars. Additionally, hotels are generally cheaper in this area, usually cost about $100 or less per night, which is certainly a negligible addition to the cost of any plastic surgery. So if you add it up, a procedure done in the Midwest along with flight tickets for two, a hotel room for a week and even a car rental would still cost thousands of dollars less than getting it done in one of the coastal hot spots.

Why Kansas City?
Out of all of the Midwest states, Kansas has some of the lowest rates for plastic surgery procedures, and the place to find the highest quality plastic surgeons is in Kansas City. Another excellent reason to choose Kansas City for your plastic surgery needs is the expertise of Dr. Michael Hynes, one of the most respected plastic surgeons in the region. Dr. Hynes has been in private practice as a cosmetic surgery specialist for over 25 years, and is a member of numerous plastic surgery societies, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, and is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Hynes is adamant about keeping his office on the cutting edge of cosmetic surgery, and is equally comfortable performing breast augmentations or Botox injections with full mommy makeovers and laser liposuction. Dr. Hynes performs all of his surgeries in the safety of a hospital and uses the amazing ON-Q pain relief system for his breast augmentation and tummy tuck patients.  The pain pump is pre-programmed and the patient wears it home for 3 to 5 days of pain relief eliminating the need for narcotics for nearly all patients.

Besides his professional qualifications, Dr. Hynes makes it a point to see each patient as an individual, not just another tummy tuck or breast augmentation, and performs in-depth personal interviews with each patient before the procedure, and provides the highest standards of personal post-operative care for surgeries that can be very emotionally draining on the patient. To put it simply, Dr. Hynes has all the qualifications of the high priced coastal plastic surgeons, with the time and personal dedication found in a small-town doctor.

By coming to Dr. Hynes for your plastic surgery procedure, you can be confident that your surgery will be professionally and personally handled, with a level of quality more than comparable to more expensive coastal doctors. Plastic surgery is not something to trade quality for cost on — but with Dr. Hynes professionalism, experience, and competitive Midwestern plastic surgery costs, you can easily have it both ways.

Is Breast Augmentation Right for You?

Posted by drmichaelhynes. No Comments

Is Breast Augmentation Right for You?

Although cosmetic plastic surgery in general, and breast augmentation in particular has become much more widespread and accepted during the past decades, it is still a major surgical and financial step, and candidates for the surgery should carefully consider whether this procedure is right for them. If you are considering breast augmentation, here are some things you need to know before your first consultation.

The Basics
Breast augmentation has come a long way since the first implants came out in 1964. There are two common types of implants used today, saline filled implants and silicone gel filled implant. Both are extremely safe and both implants are FDA approved.

The Process
If you do decide to have a breast augmentation, the process begins with a consultation with a plastic surgeon. You should only use a plastic surgeon who is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, since this guarantees a high standard of qualifications. During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will examine you and discuss augmentation options with you. He will show you the different implants and he will use his expertise and experience to advise you which implants will be best for you to have the best result. The surgery itself usually takes one to two hours, and is performed with a general anesthetic. Breast augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient surgery and the patient generally returns home the same day. Using the On-Q Pain Pump greatly decreases post operative pain and insures a more rapid recovery. Most patients can return to work within 1 week with some restrictions as no heavy lifting, no running or active exercising and others. Full recovery is usually 3 weeks and restrictions are then lifted.

The Benefits of Breast Augmentation
Despite the discomfort and required recovery time of the surgery, FDA studies show that over 95 percent of women who have had breast implants were very satisfied with their implants, and stated they would have the same surgery again if given the choice. The improvements in technology and medicine associated with breast implants have made it possible for more women to enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of breast augmentation with a minimum of physical discomfort.
Many women seeking a Breast Augmentation say they want to be able to fit their clothes better and be able to buy more stylish clothing. Breast augmentation surgery is also beneficial for women whose breasts lose their fullness and are droopy after pregnancy. Breast Augmentation can restore lost volume and height. Finally, improvements in implants, including a newly FDA approved silicone filled model, give patients increasingly natural looking and feeling breasts.

Breast augmentation has been shown to significantly improve the self-esteem and self-image of patients, provided they go into the surgery with realistic expectations. The majority of breast augmentation patients report being extremely happy with their implants, even ten years later.

A woman’s self-esteem can be severely compromised by breasts that are out of proportion to the rest of her body, and in fact, many breast augmentation surgeries are performed to restore symmetry. Many women report that having breasts that are more aesthetically pleasing and proportional greatly enhances their self-esteem. Many continue to say this confidence transfers into both their work and social life. In fact, in a 1990 study by the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, only two percent of women surveyed said they regretted having breast augmentation surgery.

Finally, breast augmentation can greatly improve a woman’s confidence in her own sexuality. Because she is happy with her body she is more relaxed and willing to seek out and engage in intimate relationships. However, it is important for women considering breast surgery to do it for themselves, not for others, as it is a major change in physical appearance, and should not be undergone solely for someone else’s request.

Breast Augmentation in Kansas City
If you are considering breast augmentation surgery in Kansas City, you should seriously consider a private consultation with Dr. Michael Hynes at the Hynes Plastic Surgery Center. Dr. Hynes has over 25 years of experience in performing Breast Augmentation surgery. Twice he has been named BEST PLASTIC SURGEON in Kansas City by “K.C. Magazine”. Dr. Hynes is an expert in breast augmentation surgery including other types of cosmetic surgery procedures of the face an entire body. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and is also a member of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and other reputable plastic surgery societies. During your consultation with Dr. Hynes, he will inform you of the latest options in breast augmentation surgeries, as well as your options for combining other surgeries. Some women combine other cosmetic surgeries with their Breast Augmentation. Most common is a Tummy Tuck, sometimes referred to as “Mommy Makeover”. Read about Emily’s Mommy Makeover surgery.

New Laser Liposuction (ProLipo Plus)

Did you know liposuction is one of the top surgical procedures among women and men? And its popularity is on the rise.  Laser-assisted lipolysis is a great way to obtain optimum body sculpting results.

TARA:    I mean I’ve dieted and exercised, and I’ve lost some weight, it’s just that I’ve always had that problem area, which was my bra strap area, and it was time to make a decision whether or not I was going to continue to fight that area or have a little bit of help.

LISA: I chose to have ProLipo done because I wanted an option to regular liposuction. I wanted an option for the down-time, for the pain after the procedure.

With ProLipo Plus, you can get the benefits of a body sculpting procedure done quickly, comfortably, and less invasive, and it doesn’t require general anesthesia.

TARA: I was fully awake. The only thing I really felt, and this may sound silly, but it kinda felt like a deep-tissue massage. Just a little bit of pressure, a little bit of movement. Otherwise, there really wasn’t any kind of pain at all.

LISA: When you think of surgery, you think of long down-time, anesthesia, you know, painful recovery, and that’s not what this was at all. It was really simple.

ProLipo Plus is a minimally invasive, laser-assisted lipolysis system that liquefies unwanted fat, and coagulates tissue, resulting in a tighter, slimmer body.

I could already tell a huge difference in five days, and I could tell that my bra wasn’t as tight. I didn’t have to buy a new bra, but it just felt more comfortable for me, and all of my clothing, especially the tighter shirts, didn’t have that bulge in the back, so you know, even after a week, I was ecstatic.

ProLipo Plus delivers immediately visible results. By eliminating fat and firming skin, through coagulating tissue, you can see the results right after the procedure.

LISA: When I looked at my before and after pictures, I was so amazed. I could not believe how wonderful that worked.

There’s less bleeding, less swelling, less trauma, and that means minimal down time. You can typically resume normal activity within days.

TARA: For me I have a three year old son who is running around bouncing off the walls, and I needed to be able to bounce off the walls with him. So I had a procedure that was quick and easy. The next day I was fine. Came to work. Never missed a beat.

LISA: Every process is simple. I could have gone back to work the same day. I was back to work the next day, and down time was when I was laying on the table, and he was doing it basically. I call it “lunch time lipo for working women.”

ProLipo Plus is an ideal solution for many people, and is excellent for many areas of the body. From the chin, neck, arms, flanks and abdomen to the knees, hips, waist, thighs, buttocks, and male chest.

TARA: I am having a second procedure done today. It’s going to be the hips/love handle area. This will help with the bulging over the jeans or the pants.

LISA: It doesn’t bother me a bit to tell people “this is what I’ve done,” and they’re amazed. I can lift up my arm and show them a tiny, tiny little mark that’s gone by now, and they expect to see a three or four-inch scar, and it’s just not there.

If you’re considering body sculpting, then laser assisted lipolysis may be for you. Address those trouble spots quickly, easily, and less invasive.

LISA: I would have paid more to have this procedure done, just because of the ease. It was so simple from start to finish.

TARA: I would recommend all my friends and family to do this, if they were having a problem area. Quick and easy, affordable, and I just think it’s the best option for a busy lifestyle.
